Downhill World Cup Lošinj 2018 will be the first race with a unique urban part in the World Cup

On 27th March there was a press conference on Lošinj where the minister for tourism Gari Cappelli announced the official race for the World Cup Downhill Lošinj, which will be held next year in April and will be for the first time organized in Croatia.

The race will be a unique in the World Cup, where three hundred contestants will race on the steep track, almost 2 kilometers long with an altitude difference of 250 meters and the finish at the coast. As the part, which will make the race a very unique one, is its urban part, which will a part of a track for the first time in Downhill World Cup circuit.
The event, which is particularly a sports event, is also a big tourist event for Lošinj, which will be bring from five to ten thousand people to Lošinj, commented Minister Gari Cappelli.

At the press conference also this year’s race was presented, which will start on 21st of April with the finals being on Sunday, 23rd April. This year’s race is driven in five categories: veteran, amateur, junior, female and elite and is will count for the World Cup.

The minister also highlighted the importance of additional overnight stays at the destination, especially during the off-season and its great importance to local tourism, as well as the entire Croatian tourism. Of additional importance is the fact that active cyclists, which in Europe account to around 60 million, as well as other tourists that could follow, consume on average 30% more than conventional tourists, which also represents great importance for Croatian tourism. Minister Gari Cappelli announced the desire to unify the tourism in the whole of Croatia and that a programme is the preparation, which will be dedicated to cycling tourism.

The race next year will be broadcasted live on Red Bull Media House and on 19 television stations, fully expected that the race will be watched on TV’s by a million viewers from 99 countries of the world. Beside the Ministry for Tourism Gari Cappelli, there were several other present at the press conference, v.d. Mayor of City of Mali Lošinj Ana Kučić, as well as representatives from Mountain Bike Club Trbovlje, Athletic Club Lošinj, Tourist organization of the City of Mali Lošinj and representative of Jadranka d.d. “Lošinj Hotels & Villas’.

V.d. acting Mayor Ana Kučić had a special thanks for the organizers of the Downhill Lošinj race – MTB Trbovlje and Athletic Club Losinj, which every year attract more and more enthusiasts, lovers of extreme sports to Lošinj. The municipality has been a partner for many years in the organization of the race itself, and contributes significant financial resources so that the event could take place on such a high level.
